Navigating the new superannuation landscape: A guide for Australian small businesses

Big Changes Ahead for Small Business Superannuation

Big Changes Ahead for Small Business Superannuation

The ATO has announced that the Small Business Superannuation Clearing House (SBSCH) will close on 30 June 2026.

From 1 October 2025, new businesses won’t be able to join, and the final payment the service will process will be for the March 2026 quarter.

The good news? We’ve already been getting ahead of this, and many of our clients are set up and running smoothly with automated super solutions.

For those not yet on a service like Payday Super, there are a few extra things to be aware of. Here’s what’s changing, why it matters, and how we can help make your transition seamless.

Why the Change?

The ATO’s proposed Payday Super reform means employers will pay super with each wage run, not quarterly. This aims to:

  • Ensure super is paid on time
  • Reduce missed or late payments
  • Streamline payroll
  • Cut admin through automation

Because the SBSCH is manual, it can’t support frequent payments, therefore it’s being phased out.

Employers will be liable for the superannuation guarantee charge (SGC) unless contributions are received by their employees’ superannuation fund within the required timeframe, generally 7 business days after payday.

What this means for you

If you are currently using the SBSCH, there is no need to panic. You can continue using it until June 2026, but we recommend preparing early so your business has time to adjust smoothly and avoid the last minute rush.

The good news is, there are already great alternatives available that have built-in tools that let you calculate and pay super automatically with each pay run.

How we can help

As your bookkeeping specialists, we’ll help you navigate this change with confidence. We can:

  • Review your current super setup and plan the transition
  • Help you activate or optimise super payments in Xero (or your chosen software)
  • Provide hands-on training for your payroll team
  • Keep you up to date with ATO announcements and deadlines

Our goal is to help you stay compliant, save time, and keep your payroll running seamlessly.
